Norway

Norway is a strategic and growing core area for Marathon. The Company's first operatorship on the Norwegian Continental Shelf was approved in 2002, where today the Company operates
10 licenses.

Alvheim

Marathon holds a 65 percent working interest in, and serves as operator of, the Alvheim area. Marathon's partners in Alvheim are Norske ConocoPhillips AS, with a 20 percent working interest, and Lundin Norway AS, with the remaining 15 percent working interest.

  • The Alvheim area comprises the Kneler, Boa, Kameleon and East Kameleon fields and is estimated to contain total net mean resources of approximately 130 mmboe and P90 resource of 230 mmboe.
  • Kneler was drilled into the prolific Heimdal formation to a total depth of 7,425 feet below sea level, encountering a net oil column of 115 feet.
  • Boa was drilled to a total depth of 7,531 feet below sea level and encountered a 174-foot gross hydrocarbon column, with 82 gross feet of gas on top of 92 gross feet of oil in high-quality sands.
  • Currently there are 10 producing wells and two water disposal wells.
  • A Phase 2 drilling program targeting an additional three infill production wells is planned in 2010-2011.
  • Alvheim was developed using a purpose-designed FPSO vessel.
  • The development provides for the transport of oil by shuttle tanker, and transportation of natural gas to the existing U.K. Scottish Area Gas Evacuation (SAGE) system.

Vilje

Marathon holds a 46.9 percent working interest in the Vilje Field, with partners Statoil (operator) holding a 28.9 percent working interest and Total E&P Norge AS with a 24.2 percent working interest.

  • Vilje has two production wells and is tied back to the Alvheim FPSO.
  • Drilled into the Heimdal formation in 2003, Vilje reached a total depth of 7,446 feet and encountered a gross oil column of approximately 223 feet.
  • It is estimated to contain total net mean resource of approximately 30 mmboe, and P90 resource of 40 mmboe.
  • Production commenced in August 2008.

Volund

The Volund Field is approximately five miles south of the Alvheim area. Marathon holds a 65 percent working interest in Volund and serves as operator, while Lundin Norway AS holds the remaining 35 percent working interest.

  • In September 2009, Marathon and its partners announced first production.
  • Volund joins Vilje Field as the second field developed as a subsea tieback to
Alvheim, firmly establishing the Alvheim FPSO as a new oil processing hub on
    the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
  • The Volund Field is a tieback to the Alvheim FPSO and started production in April 2010. The owners have contracted for 25 mbpd (16 mbpd net to Marathon).
  • The Volund Field is estimated to contain net resources of approximately 33 mmboe.

Gudrun

Marathon holds a 28.2 percent working interest in the Gudrun Field. Statoil is the operator. A concept design of a partial processing platform with tie-back to Statoil's Sleipner platform was approved by the partnership in January 2009. In February 2010, Marathon and its partners reached agreement on a plan of development and operation for the Gudrun Field.

Exploration

Marathon holds interests in more than 600,000 gross acres offshore Norway. In the third quarter of 2009, Marathon and its partners announced the Marihøne (PL 340) discovery, the first of several prospects near the Alvheim FPSO with tieback potential. The recoverable resources are estimated between 13 and 20 net mmboe.

The Viper oil discovery on PL 203, in the immediate vicinity of the Volund Field, was also announced in November 2009, and has recoverable net resources estimated between 3 and 5 mmboe in the Hermod injection feature.

The major growth focus in 2010 will be to drill additional South Viking Graben core area prospects, as well as to evaluate existing acreage in the Barents Sea in the PL 531 and PL 438 licenses for future drilling.
