Water TreatmentMarathon's advanced filtration technology removes sulfate ions from seawater prior to injection using sulfate removal technology (SRT) membranes. Barium sulfate scaling can be a severe problem in deepwater operations. Such scaling results from the combination of sulfate ions in injection seawater and barium ions in formation waters. Removal of these scale accumulations can be extremely difficult and expensive. Treatment with scale-inhibitor chemicals on sub-sea well completions is nearly impossible, dramatically increasing the need for sulfate removal technology. Marathon's SRT is used in 35 large projects worldwide. Projects (operators) include North Sea (Marathon, Statoil, Encana), Angola (BP, TFE, Chevron, ExxonMobil), Brazil (Petrobras, Shell), Equatorial Guinea (Hess) and the U.S. (Shell).
