Overview
Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) is an independent exploration and production (E&P) company focused on four of the most competitive resource plays in the U.S., complemented by a world-class integrated gas business in Equatorial Guinea. We became an independent E&P company on July 1, 2011 and we are based in Houston, TX.
We know our stakeholders are particularly attuned to environmental, social and governance issues, often referred to as “ESG.” Because of this, we’ve prioritized and improved how we communicate our sustainability work through our annual sustainability report which showcases our efforts to achieve safe, responsible and ethical operations.
Our Strategy
We remain committed to our framework for success, with the foundation of a strong balance sheet, ESG excellence and the competitive advantages of our multi-basin portfolio, including the Eagle Ford in Texas, the Bakken in North Dakota, the STACK and SCOOP in Oklahoma and the Permian in New Mexico. This diverse portfolio is oil weighted, but well balanced with an approximate 50% oil and 50% gas/NGL production mix.
We believe we have the right portfolio of assets and the right strategy: putting returns first, generating sustainable free cash flow at conservative oil prices and sharing that cash flow with investors.

While we feel like a start-up in many ways, our roots go back 130 years to our company's formation in 1887.
From the beginning, we focused on oil production, starting as the Ohio Oil Company. We operated as an integrated oil company for nearly 90 years of our history. In 2011, we spun off the refining business and became an independent E&P company.
