BIMEP wins the 2019 P3 Impact Award
The Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project named winner of the 2019 P3 Impact Award and Audience Choice Award.
On Sept. 24, the Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project (BIMEP), funded in part by Marathon Oil, was named winner of the 2019 P3 Impact Award, honoring the Project's status as an outstanding public-private partnership (P3) improving communities and the world. The P3 Impact Award was created by Concordia, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to fostering cross-sector partnerships for social impact; the University of Virginia; and the U.S. Department of State's Office of Global Partnerships.
Not only was the BIMEP selected as the overall winner; it was also recognized as the audience choice winner, the first time in the history of the award that one project has received both awards.
The BIMEP is a 15-year, multi-system public health program that addresses malaria morbidity and mortality affecting the population living and working on Equatorial Guinea's Bioko Island and informs a broader malaria control strategy for the rest of the African continent.
The partnership accomplished this through a long-term public-private funding agreement that incorporates the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare with expert assistance from the nonprofit community, corporate partners (Marathon Oil, Noble Energy and AMPCO), and members of the biomedical and academic communities.
In addition to standard malaria control efforts, BIMEP laid the groundwork for introducing the world's first malaria vaccine. All BIMEP malaria control interventions are provided free of charge to all residents on Bioko Island.
As reported in the Marathon Oil 2018 Sustainability Report, from 2004 to 2018, BIMEP's major accomplishments in the fight against malaria include a 76% reduction in the malaria parasite prevalence, a 63% reduction of all-cause mortality among children under 5 years old (largely attributed to malaria interventions), and elimination of one of the three main malaria vector species.
"This prestigious P3 Impact Award is deserved recognition of the outstanding results achieved by the BIMEP," said Pat Sanders, MEGPL director, who accepted the award on behalf of Marathon Oil.
